Exploring the historic shipwreck of the S.S. Yongala is a diving experience unlike any other in the world.

The exciting history of the wreck, which sank in 1911, combined with the incredible variety of marine life makes this dive an absolute must-do for every diver.

  • Explore the legendary S.S. Yongala on two unforgettable dives - arrival with the fast Yongala Express.
  • Fascinating story: The ship, which sank in 1911, remained lost for almost 50 years - it is still unclear why it sank.
  • Living ecosystem: After more than 100 years on the seabed, the Yongala is overgrown with hundreds of species of fish, rays, turtles and colorful corals.
  • For certified divers: An open water certification with at least 6 logged dives and a depth qualification is required.
  • Optional further training: Open water divers without deep dive training complete a deep orientation dive with a PADI instructor on the first wreck dive (surcharge).
  • Dive safely: Less experienced divers (less than 20 dives) should refresh their skills, are accompanied by a guide and can book an additional deep dive if required.

Itinerary

Exact itineraries vary depending on the tour type. 

Morning – check-in & preparation
Meeting point is at 7:30 am at the dive store in Alva Beach (Ayr). After check-in, you will receive a detailed briefing, organize your equipment and get to know the group and your guide.

Morning – boat trip & first dive
The Yongala Express takes you out to the wreck at around 25 knots. After the briefing, you begin your first dive on the historic shipwreck of the S.S. Yongala – an absolute highlight with a dense school of fish, rays and sometimes even sharks.

Lunch break on board
After surfacing, there is time to relax, chat and enjoy light snacks before heading back into the water.

Afternoon – Second dive
Explore more parts of the wreck on the second dive – each side offers new perspectives and an impressive variety of species.

Return to Alva Beach
We head back ashore in the early afternoon. The trip ends back at the dive store at around 15:30.

The trip starts at our Dive Shop at 36 Braby Street, Alva Beach (Ayr). Meeting point is 7:30 am to allow enough time for check-in and preparation. Return is around 15:30.

You need an open water certification with at least 6 logged dives and a depth qualification. If you do not have any deep diving training, you will complete a Deep Orientation Dive with a PADI instructor on your first wreck dive (at an extra charge).

Yes, if you have dived within the last 6 months and your skills are safe. If you have logged less than 20 dives, we recommend a refresher. You will be accompanied by a guide and may be required to do a depth orientation dive (extra charge).
