About this experience

Hervey Bay is considered the whale-watching capital of Australia and offers some of the most intense and personal encounters with humpback whales in the world. The bay is a tranquil, protected retreat where thousands of migrating whales pause, play and interact with each other – and with curious visitors like you.

Thanks to the large number of whales in a comparatively small area, sightings are almost guaranteed. In fact, we offer a whale guarantee: if you don’t see a whale, you get a free return ticket, valid for up to a year. The humpback whales in Hervey Bay are known for their playful, inquisitive nature and display spectacular behavior – from impressive leaps and whale songs to the famous “mugging” moments when they linger close to the boat.

But Hervey Bay has more to offer than just whales. The region is a paradise for nature lovers – with beautiful beaches, turquoise waters and proximity to K’gari (Fraser Island), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Experience FAQs

The humpback whales follow a seasonal migration pattern that takes them to Hervey Bay in the Australian winter (July-October). The peak season is in August and September. The Ultimate Whale Watch tours run from early July to late October, with guaranteed whale sightings on every tour between July 15 and October 9. If no whales are actually sighted, you will receive a free return ticket valid for up to one year.

As these are wild animals in their natural habitat, there are no set times for their activity – whale sightings are possible at any time of day. The Ultimate Whale Watch tours depart at 7:00 am, 11:00 am and 2:30 pm, so you can choose the time that best suits your daily schedule.

Every tour is different, but more than 30,000 humpback whales migrate along the east coast of Australia, and over 30% of them stop in Hervey Bay between July and October. This gives you one of the best chances in the world to see a large number of whales in a small area.

Regulations and our own “Be Whale Aware” guidelines prohibit approaching whales closer than 100 meters. However, the whales themselves are allowed to visit us – and often do! We affectionately call such encounters, when a whale comes right up to the boat, “whale muggings” – the perfect moment for a selfie.

This happens extremely rarely. If it does happen, our sightings guarantee applies: you will receive a free return ticket that is valid for up to one year. You can also take a look at our Live Sightings Map in advance to see the sightings of the last seven days.

For safety and comfort, we recommend flat, closed shoes, a jacket or rainwear, sun protection and, of course, your camera to capture the unforgettable moments.
