About this experience

The northernmost part of the Northern Territory – Australia’s Top End – is a place of incredible power and beauty. This is where the tropics meet the outback: mighty sandstone cliffs are adorned with ancient Aboriginal rock carvings, while national parks beckon with cascading waterfalls, dense monsoon forests and crystal-clear waterholes.

On this five-day adventure, you will spend a lot of time in the world-famous Kakadu National Park, Nitmiluk National Park with its impressive Katherine Gorge and the tropical Litchfield National Park. A real highlight is the exclusive access to Arnhem Land, one of Australia’s most untouched regions.

Special experiences such as meeting the traditional owners of the Wulna Country, an exciting crocodile cruise on the East Alligator River, the hike to the spectacular Jim Jim Falls and refreshing swimming breaks at beautiful natural pools make this trip unforgettable. The Top End shows you the wild side of Australia – intense, pristine and absolutely unique.

Itinerary

Exact itineraries vary depending on the tour type.

Your adventure begins early in the morning in Darwin. Shortly after sunrise, we head east to Corroboree Billabong, where a boat trip through the wetlands awaits you – with the best chances of seeing crocodiles and countless bird species. We continue to the legendary Cahill’s Crossing, where we cross the East Alligator River by four-wheel drive vehicle and gain exclusive access to Arnhem Land. A Bininj guide takes you to sacred sites, tells First Nations stories and leads you to impressive rock art before we spend the night in Kakadu National Park.

A real highlight awaits on the second day: the mighty Jim Jim Falls. After a hike through monsoon forest and over boulders, you can refresh yourself in the clear water beneath the thundering waterfalls. Then it’s off to the Anbangbang rock paintings, which have been telling the story of the region for thousands of years. In the afternoon, there is time for an optional scenic flight over Kakadu or a visit to the Bowali Cultural Center before we spend another night in the park.

The third day begins with a swim in one of Kakadu’s most beautiful waterholes: either in Gunlom Falls, which impresses with panoramic views over the park, or in Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), where a natural pool is hidden at the foot of a gorge. After a relaxing morning, we continue via Pine Creek, a historic gold mining town, to Nitmiluk National Park, where a private campsite and an evening under the stars await us.

On the fourth day, you will explore the spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge. On foot or on an optional boat trip, you will experience the mighty gorges, waterfalls and ancient rock paintings of this national park. In the afternoon, refresh yourself in the natural pools of Edith Falls before continuing to the next camp on the edge of Litchfield National Park.

The last day takes you into the heart of Litchfield National Park – a paradise of tropical rainforest, waterfalls and crystal-clear swimming holes. Whether Florence Falls, Wangi Falls or Buley Rockholes – natural pools everywhere invite you to swim and relax. After a picnic in the countryside, we return to Darwin in the afternoon, filled with unforgettable impressions of the Top End.

We will be happy to help you communicate with the organizer!

Basically yes, but it depends on the organizer. We will be happy to take care of this for you – just let us know!

In most cases: Yes!

📌 Important to know:
Popular tours (e.g. Fraser Island or Whitsundays) are booked out quickly and should be confirmed at least 14 days+ in advance.

Both are possible in Australia – it’s all in the mix!

Campsites offer you comfort: electricity, showers, kitchens and often a nice community atmosphere.
🚐 Freedom camping is ideal for anyone who likes to travel independently and inexpensively – but beware: overnight stays are only permitted in designated areas and vary from state to state.

We recommend a good combination of both in order to travel flexibly and relaxed.

👉 You can find all the tips and information on how free camping works legally, safely and stress-free in our blog:
Free camping in Australia – how to do it legally, relaxed & free of charge

You can pay for your booking flexibly in your preferred currency.
The following options are available:

💸 Bank transfer

Australia is a popular travel destination – especially during the school vacations, in summer (Dec-Feb) and spring (Sep-Nov) it can quickly become scarce. We recommend this especially for routes with one-way rentals or special camper models:

🕒 The earlier the better – 6+ months in advance is ideal
In the short term, many providers may already be fully booked or only more expensive options may be available.

What you should book well in advance – your Australian adventure

The battery life depends on the type of vehicle and how it is used. On average, the following applies:

1-3 nights self-sufficient – then the vehicle should be reconnected to the power grid (e.g. at a campsite).

🚐 Important to know:
The on-board battery is only fully recharged while driving (slightly) or when connected to the mains.

☀️ Some campers also have a solar panel that supports the battery when parked – ideal for short stops without a power connection. Nevertheless, we recommend:
🔌 Connect to the mains every 2-3 nights – to ensure that the fridge, lights etc. run smoothly.

🚐 With a standard camper (2WD), you may only drive on paved roads.
This means: paved roads or partially well-maintained access roads to official campsites or tourist attractions (depending on the provider).

🌄 O nly with a 4WD camper are you allowed to deviate from paved roads and drive on gravel or off-road routes.
But be careful:
For certain routes (e.g. Gibb River Road, Oodnadatta Track, Cape Leveque Road), written permission from the rental company is often required – and not all providers allow beach drives or river crossings.

💬 O ur tip: If you’re planning an off-road adventure, just let us know – we’ll tell you which routes are permitted and which campers are suitable.

💳 Yes, a credit card is required to collect the vehicle.

Even if you can pay for your booking with Ausventure Travel conveniently by credit card or bank transfer, all rental companies require a valid credit card on collection.

This is required in order to:

  • pre-authorize the deposit (liability sum)(depending on the insurance package selected),
  • to charge any additional fees such as tolls, fines or fuel costs retrospectively.

💡 Tip: A prepaid credit card or debit card is not accepted in most cases. Make sure that your credit card is valid at the time of collection and has a sufficient limit.
