Itinerary

Exact itineraries vary depending on the tour type.

When you arrive on the island, you will be given a wetsuit, mask and snorkel, and off you go on one of the most fun swimming experiences ever. Tender boats are used for additional safety in the water, and the crew will be in the water with you throughout the swim.

As soon as you are in the water, the sea lions encourage you to play. With somersaults and elegant turns, they glide past you effortlessly – a unique experience in the great outdoors.

As the sea lions are threatened with extinction, strict regulations apply: We are not allowed to venture too close to the beach and must treat the animals with respect at all times. After an hour or so of swimming, we return to the boat, where hot showers and a coffee machine are waiting for us.

The tours do not take place every day. Each site is visited a maximum of four times a week to minimize the impact on the sea lion colonies.

Experience FAQs

The Sea Lion Tour takes place on islands in Spencer Gulf. We head to the sheltered side of the island, but depending on the weather, there may be moderate waves and current. Swimmers wear a wetsuit for buoyancy and warmth. Some snorkeling experience is recommended. You should be able to tread water for 5 minutes and swim the length of a pool. A crew member will accompany you in the water and a tender boat is available for emergencies. Weather conditions are best from December to April.

The license conditions limit the length of stay on the island. Swimmers can expect 45 minutes to an hour.

The water depth is between 1.2 m and 2.5 m above a mostly sandy bottom. A wetsuit is provided, and pool noodles are also available for additional buoyancy if required.

The wetsuit provides warmth, but it can also be chilly on the water, especially in windy conditions or during the winter months.

No, but sightings of sea lions are very likely. The animals are wild and not always active or playful. The crew will give instructions on how best to behave in the water. A crew member is always in the water to maximize the experience and ensure safety.

Children under the age of 16 must always be supervised by an adult in the water. Guests under the age of 18 must have a form signed by a parent or guardian.

Yes, the tour is regulated by the Department of Environment and Water (DEW). Strict guidelines apply for the protection of the animals. Calypso Star Charters has developed its own code of conduct, which has been agreed with the authorities.

Yes, masks with corrective lenses are available to borrow on board (replacement will be requested in the event of loss or damage). Please ask the crew member on board.
