Itinerary

Exact itineraries vary depending on the tour type.

Your half-day whale watching tour begins with boarding at the marina in Hervey Bay. After around 30 minutes, you can take a look at the Kingfisher Bay Resort while we pick up other guests. We then head out past the largest sand island in the world – K’Gari (Fraser Island) – towards Platypus Bay.

This is where the exciting search for humpback whales begins. Our experienced crew will recognize the telltale signs of the gentle giants, and you will have the best view of their playful behaviour from the various viewing levels. Whether from above with a panoramic view or from the lower decks close to the action – unforgettable encounters are guaranteed. With a bit of luck and if the whales linger nearby, there is even the opportunity to go into the water with them – a real adventure of a lifetime!

On the way back, you can enjoy the beauty of the remote west coast of K’Gari. The pristine white beaches, colorful sand cliffs and freshwater creeks make for the perfect ending before we relax and return to the marina.

Experience FAQs

The duration and route depend heavily on the weather, tides and of course the location of the whales. We usually see the humpback whales in Platypus Bay, about 30 minutes after leaving the Great Sandy Straits Marina. Depending on the conditions, however, it can also take 40 minutes to 1.5 hours before we spot the first whales. In any case, you will enjoy fantastic views of islands, sandbanks, marine life and the west coast of K’Gari (Fraser Island) during the trip.

The humpback whales visit Hervey Bay from mid-July to October. At the beginning of the season, it is mainly curious young whales that can be seen, but from September onwards, mothers and their calves are increasingly seen – a particularly touching sight.

Both tours have their appeal. The Morning Tour starts earlier, takes a little longer due to the stop at Kingfisher Bay Resort and offers the option of booking the exclusive “Whales & Lunch @ Fraser” package. The Afternoon Cruise sails directly to the whales and ends with a beautiful sunset over the ocean – perfect for a glass of bubbly at the end. In the end, it’s a question of your personal preferences and travel planning.

This happens extremely rarely, as we deliberately adjust the season times to the whales’ migration routes. However, if it does happen, you will receive an open return ticket that you can redeem until the end of the season. Some guests have even used their ticket years later – our sighting guarantee applies!

Yes, there is a licensed bistro on board with snacks and drinks – from hot dishes such as pies or sandwiches to sweets, coffee, tea and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Yes, we can accommodate vegetarian, gluten-free or lactose-free requests – please indicate this when booking. Alternatively, you can also bring your own snacks.
