This eight-day camping adventure through the Australian outback is an epic road trip from South Australia to the Northern Territory. You’ll traverse a land of rich indigenous culture, untouched wilderness and breathtaking, untamed landscapes.

Experience the Red Centre – a colorful, almost surreal world of desert plains, weathered mountain ranges, red rock gorges and some of Australia’s most sacred Aboriginal sites.

End each day with magical sunsets in the outback and stories around the campfire with new and old friends – moments that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Itinerary

Exact itineraries vary depending on the tour type. 

Adelaide to Flinders Ranges
Start at 6:00 am in Adelaide with your guide. Coffee stop in Port Wakefield, then hike to Alligator Gorge in Mount Markable National Park. Lunch in Quorn with a walk through the town, famous for the Pichi Richi Railway. Arrive in Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park and hike to Arkaroo Rock, an important Adnyamathanha cultural site. Afternoon arrival at Skytrek Willow Springs Station – your base camp for the next few days. Dinner and stargazing under one of the clearest skies in the southern hemisphere. Distance: approx. 510 km.

linders Ranges
Morning hike through the Flinders Ranges with views of waterholes and wilderness. Participate in a conservation activity. Afternoon drive through the Brachina Gorge, stop at a country inn, return to camp for relaxation and dinner. Travel time: approx. 3 hours.

Oodnadatta Track
Off-road descent along the legendary Oodnadatta Track. Stops at Lake Eyre, Mutonia Sculpture Park and Anna Creek Station (largest cattle farm in the world). Arrival in William Creek in the late afternoon, dinner and an optional drink in the historic William Creek Hotel. Driving distance: approx. 500 km.

Coober Pedy
Visit to the underground city of Coober Pedy, opal mine, fossil hunting, opal cutting demonstration. Visit to Josephine’s Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage. Dinner and overnight stay in an underground bunkhouse. Distance: approx. 170 km.

Kanku-Breakaways & Kings Canyon
Drive through the Moon Plains, past the Dingo fence, crossing the border into the Northern Territory. Arrive in Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) and camp at Kings Creek Station. Sunset from the viewing platform and dinner. Distance: approx. 770 km.

Kings Canyon
Early start for the Kings Canyon Rim Walk with 300 m high sandstone walls, hidden waterholes and Priscilla’s Crack. Views of the Lost City and the Garden of Eden. Afternoon drive to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, sunset over Uluru, dinner at camp. Driving distance: approx. 350 km.

Uluru
Early sunrise over Uluru, guided 10 km base walk with breaks at waterholes, visit to the cultural center and dot painting workshop with a local Anangu artist. Free time at the pool or activities at Ayers Rock Resort. Dinner at the camp. Distance: approx. 60 km.

Kata Tjuta & departure
Early start for sunrise at Kata Tjuta, guided Valley of the Winds hike (3 hours) with insight into the local Anangu culture. Return to Yulara in the late morning. Optional transfer to Uluru Airport or to Alice Springs. Driving distance: approx. 120 km.

  • Cancellations within 3 days prior to departure or non-participation in the tour will incur a 100% cancellation fee.
  • Cancellations made between 4 and 14 days prior to departure will receive a 50% travel credit valid for three years from the date of purchase.
  • For cancellations between 15 and 30 days, 100% of the amount can be credited as a travel credit valid for three years from the date of purchase.

Experience FAQs

Yes, AAT Kings offers a transfer from the Desert Gardens Hotel in Yulara to Alice Springs. Departure is between 12:30 and 13:00 on the last day of the tour (March to November). The shuttle arrives in Alice Springs at approximately 19:00.

The tour starts in Adelaide at around 5:30 am on day 1 and ends in Yulara (Uluru) at midday on day 7.

Yes, please inform us of any special dietary requirements when booking. We offer fresh, varied meals. Snacks, soft drinks and alcohol are not included.

Each guest may bring one piece of soft luggage or a rucksack (max. 15 kg) and one small piece of hand luggage.

You’ll sleep at a mixture of national park camps, bush campgrounds and a night in a common room in Coober Pedy. Most campsites have basic toilet and shower facilities, except Warren Gorge.

You sleep in a traditional Australian swag – a sturdy canvas roll with a built-in mat. If you wish, you can book a deluxe double swag upgrade for $300 (for 2 people).

Yes, please bring your sleeping bag and pillow. Alternatively, you can rent a used sleeping bag for 20 $ when booking.

A medium level of fitness is required. Some days you walk 3-12 km on uneven terrain, often in the heat or rain.

There is no age limit, but you should assess for yourself whether you are fit for hiking, swimming and swag camping. You must be able to get yourself up from the swag, which is close to the ground.
