Knowledge that enriches your travels.

What are you really allowed to do? Where is it allowed? And how do you find the most beautiful spots away from crowded caravan parks?
Here you can find out how free camping works in Australia, what you need to look out for and why preparation is key.
If you want to free camp, there are a few things you need to bear in mind.

What is free camping anyway?

Free camping means that you stay overnight free of charge outside traditional campsites, e.g. in public areas, rest areas or in certain natural areas.

Can you just do that?

Free camping is not generally prohibited in Australia, but it is not permitted everywhere either.
Many municipalities provide free sites, while others have strict controls and impose fines.
Rule of thumb: only camp where it is expressly permitted.

Where can you camp for free in Australia?

Many smaller towns offer free or donation-based pitches – often on the edge of town, at a sports field or near a river.
Some sites even offer toilets or picnic tables.
Look for signs like “RV Stop”, “Free Campground” or “Donation Welcome”.

Yes, they do exist: free campsites by the sea, usually far away from the tourist hotspots.
In Western Australia, South Australia and North Queensland, you can find a few quiet bays where overnight stays are permitted.
But: always follow the signs and use apps like WikiCamps to help you!

There are numerous rest areas along the highways where overnight stays are permitted – usually for a maximum of 24 hours.
These places are simple, but perfect for a stopover!

In some regions you are allowed to camp on public nature areas – e.g. in the outback, in certain national parks or on registered areas (e.g. NT Crown Land).
Important: Find out in advance whether you need a permit or whether there are any restrictions.

What you should bear in mind when free camping

To ensure that free camping remains permitted in the future, responsible behavior is important! Here are the most important dos and don’ts:

✔ Thu:

  • Only stay overnight in legal places
  • Take your garbage back with you
  • Observe rest periods
  • Only use the toilet if available – otherwise travel self-contained
  • Always have water & supplies with you
  • Respect nature, animals and other campers

❌ Don’t:

  • Set up a tent or tables in the middle of public spaces
  • Making a fire without permission
  • Spend the night “wild” on popular beaches
  • Stay several nights if not allowed

Our 3 favorite free camping tips

Free camps are popular – especially in the high season. If you arrive too late, you sometimes have to drive on. It pays to be there early!

It gets hot quickly, especially in the outback or in the north – it’s best not to stand in the middle of the sun.
Many free camps are a little out of the way and therefore often have poor or no cell phone reception. It’s best to check beforehand!

Many free camps usually have no supplies. So: always have water, food, bin bags and toilet paper with you.

Conclusion: Free camping with a plan = freedom without stress

Free camping is a great way to experience Australia independently, close to nature and cheaply – if you know where it’s allowed and how to behave properly. Good preparation, the right apps and a little consideration are usually all you need to be legally free.

Not every free spot is an Instagram dream. Sometimes it’s just a rest stop with lots of dust. But that’s exactly what a low-budget adventure is all about and makes you appreciate the real dream places even more.
